British Values and SMSC
We believe that our school curriculum must promote the skills, knowledge and attributes to ensure children grow up with confidence, high self-esteem and resilience. Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural (SMSC) development is key to ensure children are given every opportunity to flourish spiritually, develop socially, have a strong moral purpose and learn about their own culture and cultures of others. This is achieved through our PSHE curriculum which is carefully planned, led by the RE and PSHE co-coordinators to ensure each aspect of the SMSC curriculum is covered.
We agree with the Department for Education’s five-part definition of British values:
- democracy
- the rule of law
- individual liberty
- mutual respect
- tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
The Governing Body and school staff are clear about their statutory safeguarding responsibilities in our ever-changing world and because of this, it is essential that the Prevent Strategy is understood by both staff and parents. We believe the aims of the Prevent strategy should be intrinsic to our whole school ethos, with children being encouraged to broaden their horizons, challenge and debate their ideas with respect and tolerance towards others at all times.
